RX8 heating/fan issue

Recommended Posts

Right firstly I got the coolant light on so naturally I checked the level. It was empty, topped it up light still remained on kept checking regularly and whatever amount of liquid I put into the tank it would be gone. This happened a week ago so now the light has gone off but the car is overheating and fan is coming on way too quick. Is this a problem with the coolant tank itself or the sensor acting up? Or is there a leak with the pipes?? I have recently rebuilt the engine so if its anything serious I will be flogging it! Appreciate any help

Just my opinion but as some of these cars are nearly 16 years old now more than likely it’s a radiator or pie leak if not replaced already. To get a better view of where the leak is coming from that is if you cant see any thing from the engine bay there is a little under tray under the radiator so you can whip that of to gain a better idea where the leak is coming from. Also you can pressurize the system as a alternative to diagnose the leak. And yes the heater cant work without coolant.

Btw you can get better access to looking at the pipes if you remove the battery tray. Its in 2 parts :)

Did you rebuild the engine or did someone else? If you did then try as Aido above suggested & source the leak or if you can't find it do a champagne test on it. If someone else did the rebuild, bring it back to them to check especially if it was only recently.

What's a champagne test? :P Looked at the car today. Heated it up filled it with a few litres of coolant, no obvious sign of a leak anywhere. Still it's not holding the coolant but when the fan came on after having the car on for about 10 mins the tank overflowed. Anyone any further ideas to what this could be? Also when the we had the coolant tank with a decent level of coolant we added a rad sealer to it incase of a leak somewhere down the line.

WOW, really surprised you didnt find the leak if you removed the little under tray under neath the radiator and battery tray as it gives great access for touching and looking at pipes, radiator and connections.

All  I can think of is maybe its someting to do with the heater matrix pipes inside the car, is your carpet wet in the passenger side??

OK the problem has looked to have sorted itself out for the time being. Brought the car for a little spin, didn't overheat once. Coolant level stayed put for the moment. Could it have just been airlocked with the pushing of coolant out yesterday?? Fingers and legs crossed.

I doubt it because you should be able to drop all the coolant in the radiator and refill without problems.

It seems to me the rad sealer may have done the trick for you as K-Seal done the trick for me a while back

Just keep an eye on this big time as having coolant issues can result in engine damage if not kept under complete control as Im sure your aware:)

If your in any doubt in the future as jp suggested just bring it to your specialist or mechanic for peace of mind:)
